Points spread even in Monday's double-header

Category: | 0 Replies

Compton's Shane Beckles doing well to keep his footing after a solid challenge from Renaldo Hunte.

In stark contrast to the opening night's proceedings where three teams ran off with points from outright wins, last night's games in the Barbados Football Association Premier League saw sides splitting the spoils and taking a point each as both games finished in ties. Playing in Zone 2 action at the Empire Ground, the University of the West Indies Blackbirds and Rendezvous FC scored a goal each, while Home Improvement Hardware Compton and Mark's Auto Spares Porey Spring both had two goals apiece to part ways as equals.

Rendezvous opened their account first in the night's opening game when Renaldo Bignall scored on the half-hour mark. However, UWI, drew level just eight minutes later when Jamario Worrell took a good run down the left flank before making a sharp turn just shy of the goal. Leaving his marker running, he caught sight of Mario Harte standing clear in the 18-yard box. A well-placed lob found Harte's head and he put the ball to the right of a stationary Romaine Primus.

The nightcap game was easily the most exciting game thus far this season. With Porey Spring touted as favourites going into the encounter, they got off the mark early on as Shakir Skeete found himself in the right place at the right time to put away a cross in the 6th minute.

Refusing to lay down, Compton got themselves an equaliser in the 29th minute from Shakiyl Cox. With the sides trading punches through the rest of the first half and most of the second, Porey Spring pulled away to the front once again when Shamar Edwards tipped the scales in the 81st minute. It looked like Porey Spring would have been easing off with the win, but Compton had other plans and Cox came through for his team to pick up a brace in the 89th minute.

The football action continues this week on Thursday before heading into the weekend. Back at Empire, Paradise FC and Clayton's Kola Tonic Notre Dame get their feet wet for the first time in the competition at 7:00 PM. The nightcap will see a Zone 1 top-of-the-table clash as Weymouth Wales and Abrahams United Silver Sands locking horns at 9:00 PM.
