The Barbados Defence Force Programme are becoming harder to catch in Zone 2 of the Barbados Football Association Premier League as they extended their lead on the rest of the pack with a 2-0 win over Home Improvement Hardware Compton last night. Now on 12 points after their fourth win in as many games, the soldiers will definitely be one of the teams to watch in this year's competition.
Both teams looked evenly-matched inside the opening minutes of the game with Compton taking the game to the Sports Programme. With Compton struggling to move the ball from the midfield into the final third, the soldiers were having a better time of it.
BDF should have ended with three but their first goal was thrown away by Damion Thorington just about 20 minutes into the game. On the attack, Thorington got the ball and evaded the Compton custodian to have a wide open goal that he could have literally walked the ball into. However, the put a deft right boot on the ball that saw the shot going wide of the nets and the crowd rocking with laughter.
The soldiers were able to fix the earlier mistake when captain Shaquille Boyce put his team in control before the halftime break. He found the nets in the 42nd to put some pressure on the embattled Compton side.
The Sports Programme doubled up on their lead just after the resumption of the encounter as Kyle Gibson came off the bench with a contribution in the 55th minute and that goal would be the last for the game. Compton now languish in the relegation zone right over Rendezvous FC with just two points from two draws in four games.
That Premier League clash was preceded by a Division match-up which saw the Barbados Soccer Academy taking a 1-0 win over Pride of Gall Hill. Melvin Doxilly tipped the scales in the 61st minute o see Soccer Academy taking home three points.
The league is set to continue tomorrow with a double-header at the Wildey Turf. The Sports Programme is back in action again at 7:00 PM as they take on Mark's Auto Spares Porey Spring. The nightcap game goes to Paradise and Abrahams United Silvers Sands in a Christ Church derby.
