Novum Energy Mavericks continue their quest to over-take UWI Blackbirds and capture their first Women’s League title when they put 12 goals past a struggling Empire Women’s Team on Saturday at the Wildey Turf.
Mavericks needed a win if they were to keep pace of the Blackbirds, going into the final rounds of games and they did in a big way in the first match of the night. Aaliyah Boyce and Kerisha Catlyn both scored hatricks while Felicia Jarvis and Alana Boyce each scored a brace. Shai Carrington and Fabiana Walthrust scored the remaining two goals.
Immediately after UWI Blackbirds put a bit more distance between them and Kick Start Genesis when they came away with a 3-1 victory. Soraya Toppin-Herbert opened the scoring in the first half for UWI before Shanice Stevenson equalized for Genesis. Acacia Small and Kaitlin Padmore wrapped up the business for UWI with two late goals to keep UWI ahead of the pack.
Mavericks trail UWI by three points in the standings with UWI having played one less game. Genesis will need a miracle if they are to remain in contention after losing to UWI. They are sitting in third position, now five points off the pace with three games remaining.
National Sports Council and Empire are in fourth and fifth respectively.
