Tridents set to repeat history

Category: | 0 Replies

The senior Bajan Tridents National Football Team is expected to repeat history when they go head to head with the Cayman Islands tomorrow night at the Truman Bodden Stadium.

Twenty-six years ago, both teams went head-to-head in the Caribbean Cup Qualifiers and Barbados decimated Cayman Islands 6-1.

Fresh off a 4-0 win against (French) Saint Martin, the local lads journeyed to the Cayman Islands yesterday for their second encounter in the Concacaf Nations League group phase games, where Barbados, playing in League C is seeking qualification to League B and a shot at the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup.

Despite Cayman Islands securing a 2-0 victory over USVI, in their first Nations League game also on Thursday night, the line-up of the Barbados Football Association’s senior squad, led by Captain Rashad Jules will be no walk in the park for the opposition.

In the qualifying stage of the competition, Cayman Islands lost three games against Montserrat (2-1), Dominican Republic (3-0) and Jamaica (4-0), and drew (0-0) against St Lucia.

Meanwhile, the Barbados Men’s Senior National Team drew 2-2 with Guyana in September, fell 3-0 to El Salvador in October, and walked over USVI 3-0 in November before losing 1-0 to Nicaragua in March.

With international players Hallam Hope, Nick Blackman and Thierry Gale, the team, chosen by Head Coach Russell “The Little Magician” Latapy is definitely a force to be reckoned with and fans will be expecting the magician to work his magic once again.

While Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme utility man Raheim Sargeant and fellow teammate Rashad Smith are out, the 18-man squad is still expected to return home with the blue, yellow and black held aloft.

Barbados team:

Goalkeepers: Kishmar Primus and Liam Brathwaite.

Defenders: Carl Hinkson, Ricardio Morris, Shane Codrington, Keason Trench and Akeem Hill.

Midfielders: Thierry Gale, Mario Williams, Nicoli Brathwaite, Hadan Holligan, Jomo Harris and Omani Leacock.

Strikers: Rashad Jules, Hallam Hope, Nick Blackman, T’Shane Lorde and Armando Lashley.

Officials: Russell Latapy (Head Coach), Fitzgerald Carter (Assistant Coach), Martin Newton (Manager), Ryan Brewster (Trainer), Nicola Yard (Medic) and Patrick Mapp (Equipment Manager).
