One was the magic number yesterday when six teams in Groups A, C and E met in their final encounters of the Barbados Football Association’s inaugural Capelli SuperCup.
The six teams, anxious for a ticket into the Championship Stage, converged on the Wildey Turf in a showdown, erasing all thoughts and bets cast on who would advance to the next stage of the competition. And while fans were expecting the outcome to be a much bigger margin, all advancing teams won their games by a 1-0 score.
In the nightcap game, the Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme, playing against Blackspurs, finally got on the scorecard in the 67th minute when Renaldo Trim pocketed, also bringing his goal tally for the competition up to four.
Brittons Hill was ousted by Silver Sands after Derrine Gale-Forde capitalized on a penalty kick in the 49th minute.
Pride of Gall Hill, a Division One team, was able to defeat Premier League based University of the West Indies Blackbirds 1-0 when Shakerie Mottley pocketed in the 38th minute, giving them the nod into the Championship stage.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, Weymouth Wales capped off their final qualifying round this weekend against Central League Spartans 7-0.
The green machines demolished Spartans, with Riverre Williams scoring a beaver trick against the St George side. He scored the opening goal in the 37th minute, ending the first half 1-0, but came back in the second half and registered a hat trick in the 51st, 62nd and 76th.
Arantees Lawrence also secured a brace, managing goals in the 68th and 82nd, and Ricardio Morris got his name on the score sheet in the 71st.
In the nightcap, Notre Dame registered the biggest defeat of the night, ending their encounter against Checker Hall 8-0; the seventh such game where the winners registered an eight-goal lead for the victory.
Two hat tricks were recorded in that game courtesy Azarel Croney and Dwayne Mars. Teenaged Dishon “Eto” Howell opened the scoring for the Bayland side as early as the second minute, while Akeem Bourne sealed the deal in the 91st minute.
However, in the opening game Barbados Soccer Academy levelled Kick Start 5-0 to make it to the Championship Stage.
Corey Hoyte registered a hat trick for his side, while Ozim Henderson and Romario Dennie scored one goal each to give BSA the victory.
