Local football was dealt a further blow with the announcement of the cancellation of this year’s FIFA Under-17 and Under-20 World Cups, and the 2020 Concacaf Under-17 Qualifiers and Championship, and the 2020 Concacaf Under-20 Championship.
This was disclosed by FIFA’s General Secretary Philippe Moggio in a circular dated January 4, 2021.
“Due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19 on the football calendar and continued concerns over international travel, FIFA announced the cancellation of the FIFA U-17 and U-20 World Cups, scheduled to take place in Peru and Indonesia in 2021, respectively,” the statement read.
The statement added: “Given these circumstances, we regret to inform you that Concacaf has also taken the decision to cancel the 2020 Concacaf Under-17 Qualifiers and Championship, and the 2020 Concacaf Under-20 Championship.”
The local Under-20 boys were set to play their Qualifiers in August, but according to President Randy Harris in a previous statement, it was now the proverbial wait and see game.
Indonesia will still host the 23rd edition of the men's Under-20 World Cup in 2023 and Peru will stage the Under-17 Championship in the same year, which is carded to be the 19th edition of that tournament.
