Despite a valiant effort, the Lady Tridents went down 5-0 to hosts Panama in the opening encounter of Group D in the 2022 Concacaf Women’s Qualifiers at the Estadio Rommel Fernandez in Panama City.
The Lady Tridents faced a barrage of attacks from Las Canaleras in the first 15 minutes, and though they managed to hold on through the attack, Panama’s Karla Riley was prolific securing a brace for the home side.
Barbados’ captain and custodian Kamillah “Kaka” Burle was forced to save twice in the eighth minute, denying striker Lineth Cedeno and Riley’s dangerous link-up play, and went on to keep them at bay for the first 40 minutes of play, with the help of center back Alyssa Yard and Adrienne Forde.
Tiffany White clipped Riley in the penalty area before defender Yomira Pinzon edged the ball past Burke in goal to give the hosts the lead in the 41st minute before Riley came back to put her side up 2-0 before the final whistle of the first half.
Panama went on to secure three more goals in the second half as the Lady Tridents were reduced after Keinelle Johnson was expelled from the field of play.
Barbados will now be aiming to get a more favorable result against Aruba in the Dominican Republic on Tuesday.
