Lady luck smiled on the Lady Tridents tonight and helped them to secure a 3-1 victory against Aruba in their second Group D encounter in the 2022 Concacaf W Qualifiers.
The Lady Tridents opened the scoring in the fourth minute when midfielder Soroya Toppin-Herbert made good use of a defensive error by Chameral Luities in the Aruban rear guard, to secure a well-placed finish.
Rianna Cyrus gave the team the 2-0 lead with a first-half penalty after Makela Alleyne was fouled in the box by Aruba’s custodian Lyxienne Loopstock after 34 minutes of play, converting expertly despite the goalkeeper’s dive in the right direction.
However, Aruba momentarily was able to make a short comeback in the 68th minute when strike Aisse Gumbs placed the ball perfectly in the path of Vanessa Susanna, who beat Barbados’s number one Kamillah “Kaka” Burke.
Substitute Cheyanna Burnett-Griffith however sealed the win and gave the local lasses the three points and the victory in the 90th minute after Ashanee Thompson found the forward run of Cyrus, who crossed to Burnett-Griffith who fired into an empty net and victory for the Lady Tridents.
Barbados created 12 chances on goal, testing Aruba’s custodian Lyxienne Loopstok, with an overall ball possession of 49%. They committed 14 fouls in the game and two players Tiffany White and Daphne Watson-James, received cautions from Canadian referee Carly Shaw-MacLaren.
