Barbados’ women were on the wrong end of a 2-1 score-line against Martinique after putting in a solid performance in front of their home crowd at the Usain Bolt Complex.
Felicia Jarvis was in a fiery mood and drew Barbados level in the 29th minute after Emeline Fontaine had put Martinique ahead in the 13th minute. The young Barbados forward was ably assisted by captain Gabrielle Lopez and Soraya Toppin-Herbert who were both a class act in in mid-field.
Lopez’s crafty playing style which resulted in some piercing through balls to the flanks and to the centre forwards were a handful for the Martinique defense. Toppin-Herbert on the other hand was comfortable dribbling and running at her opponents.
It was a game Barbados should have won. Jarvis in one of her attempts on goal marginally missed a shot across goal after slipping the backline to go one on one with the Martinique keeper.
The game seemed destined for a draw following a tight second half but Barbados conceded in the 91st minute as Prisca Carin netted the winner for the visitors.
Barbados were left to rue their chances as Martinique’s women proved the more clinical side with the few chances they created on the night.
