Barbados succumbed to their first defeat in their first ever game of the Windwards Island Football Tournament (WIFA) last night at the hands of Dominica.
Playing in the first game of a double-header at the Fond Playing Field in the north of Grenada, the Bajan lads never looked settled. A defensive error on the right led to the first goal by Dominica in the 22nd minute. The Dominica attack won the ball after the Barbados defender slipped allowing him to cut across the top of the 18-yard box and fire home past custodian Keasel Brome.
It took Barbados about 20 minutes before they equalized. Rashad Jules, who along with Ricardio Morris had teamed up with the squad from Tulsa Football Club, found enough space in the middle to fire home a long-range shot, albeit helped by an uneven bounce as it approached the Dominica keeper.
It was 1-1 at the break and when play resumed Dominica took advantage of Barbados again scoring in the 52nd minute. This time they broke down the right side of the Barbados defense to secure a 2-1 lead.
Dominica’s captain was ejected from the game after being shown a second yellow card. The team however held on for the remaining minutes of the game to record a 2-1 victory over the Barbadians.
Dominica moved to four points, the same as host Grenada from two games having drawn their first. St Lucia are third on three points while Barbados and St. Vincent are on zero.
Barbados will be hoping to pick up their first points of the tournament when they play St. Lucia in their second game on Sunday at 5.30 p.m.
