THE Barbados Under-17 girls’ team were nipped by Cuba in their bid to advance out of Group D in the preliminary round of the CONCACAF Qualifiers in Guyana. Cuba defeated the host 8-0 on Sunday evening to secure a better goal difference and to win the group.
After a hard-fought defensive game, the young Bajan lasses drew 0-0 with Cuba in their final match-up last Friday.
At the time, Barbados were leading Group D on four points, and were hoping Guyana would defeat Cuba by less than five goals to ensure their ticket into the World Cup. Cuba, however, went on to demolish Guyana 8-0.
Despite both Cuba and Barbados finishing the tournament on four points, Cuba advanced to the top position with superior goal difference.
