Barbados Senior Women’s National team delivered a not so hearty welcome to a young Turks & Caicos Islands national team when they thrashed them 10-0 earlier today in an international friendly at the BFA Wildey Turf.
The first ever senior international played at this venue started at 4.00 p.m. and the visitors never looked settled. The lady Tridents set up camp in the Turks’ half and made life miserable for their goalkeeper Olivia Graveley. Graveley must be commended for her efforts in the bars having made some daring attempts to stop the Barbados front line from scoring.
Marissa King opened the score for Barbados with a delightful lob that eluded the Turks custodian in the 4th minute. This was followed by Shonna Evelyn’s 12th minute conversion after Barbados won a corner kick.
More glory would come for Barbados in the 25th minute when left winger Shante Padmore blasted home Barbados’ fourth goal from about 20 yards out. Striker Felicia Jarvis was not to be left out of the action. She scored in the 29th minute to put Barbados up 4-0.
Barbados’ captain Gabriella Lopez got her share of the action as well. This was after Padmore made one of her runs down the left flank and shot at the bars only to see her effort saved by the goalkeeper. Rianna Cyrus retrieved the ball and passed to Shanice Stevenson who set up Lopez for her first shot. This shot came back of the upright and fell kindly for Lopez who then rifled a left foot shot into the roof of the opponents’ net.
At the half Barbados were comfortably leading 5-0.
The second half started in similar fashion to the first with Rianna Cyrus getting her first of two goals in the 48th minute. She scored after winning a tussle in the box and shooting wide of the approaching keeper.
Substitute Tiana Bynoe wasted no time in getting on the score sheet. She scored in the 69th minute when she collected a pass and got enough space to shoot home Barbados’ seventh goal.
Cyrus then returned in the 76th minute to score her second goal followed by Shanice Stevenson’s first in the 80th minute.
Stevenson however left the best act for last. Barbados won a free kick on the left just outside the 18-yard box and Stevenson opted to take the kick. This perfectly taken kick sailed past the entire back line, around the keeper and into the nets for Barbados’ 10th goal.
The game ended Barbados 10 – 0 over Turks & Caicos Islands.
The teams play their second of two international friendly matches on Sunday at 4.00 p.m. at the same venue.
The starters for Barbados were:
Gabriella Lopez (captain)
Kamilliah Burke (Goalkeeper)
