Unity Stars rebounded from their first-round loss at the hands of Mavericks last week to register an emphatic 3-0 win over Technique FC on Sunday when the second round of the 2017 Women’s League continued at the Wildey Turf.
Stars opened the scoring in the first game of the evening under cloudy conditions with a goal compliments of Marissa King with only 15 minutes on the board. The ever-improving Eden Lodge based side scored another two goals in the second half to secure their first win of the tournament. Makala Alleyne scored in the 49th minute while Nashandi Clarke hit home in the 90th minute.
Technique are yet to score a goal in the competition and succumbed to their second defeat in as many games.
In the second game of the evening Mavericks secured a narrow win over Kickstart Genesis with a 2-1 result. Second half goals from Felicia Jarvis in the 49th minute and Aaliyah Boyce in the 61st put Mavericks in the ascendency. Christaline Chandler pulled back one for Genesis in the 63rd minute to register her second goal of the tournament.
This game was Mavericks’ second win in as many games to give them maximum points. They are in second place by an inferior goal difference to the leaders National Sports Council (NSC).
Tianna Hackett became an instant heroine in the third game for NSC with a 90th minute strike to pull off a thrilling win over UWI Blackbirds. This was the Blackbirds first game of the tournament and matched the defending champions stride for stride for the entire game. When the game looked to be heading for a stalemate, referee Beverley Grant adjudged that UWI committed a foul against the NSC.
Hackett’s spot kick was precise enough to elude the UWI keeper Cadijah Mars for the winner.
NSC maintains the top position in the standings on six points with a superior goal difference over Mavericks who are also on six. Unity Stars are third on three points followed by Kickstart Genesis who are also on three points while UWI Blackbirds, Technique and Crane & Equipment Ellerton are yet to pick up a point.
The league continues Tuesday when Technique will come up against Crane & Equipment Ellerton. Mavericks will play UWI Blackbirds on Wednesday and National Sports Council will contest EFSC Unity Stars on Thursday. All games start at 6.00 p.m.
